Dreaming of Luxury

David Saini, founder and owner of David’s Fine Linens—Toronto’s luxury linens authority with locations in North York’s Bayview Village Shopping Centre and the Design District—tells us about the value of timeless design, why natural materials make for the most luxurious sleep, and how your bedding might be exacerbating your seasonal allergies

Living Luxe (LL): Why is investing in high-quality bedding ultimately more sustainable—and more luxurious—than constantly updating with trends?

David Saini (DS): Luxury is most compelling when it’s built to endure. Investing in high-quality bedding means choosing pieces designed to last for years, reducing the need for frequent replacement and unnecessary waste. Rather than following seasonal trends, thoughtfully made linens remain relevant over time, both aesthetically and functionally. There’s also a quiet confidence in owning pieces that don’t chase trends but remain timeless. These linens become part of the daily rhythm of a home, improving with use rather than wearing out. Longevity creates a more sustainable approach, where luxury is defined by craftsmanship and comfort instead of excess.

LL: What should consumers look for when assessing the quality and longevity of luxury linens, beyond just thread count?

DS: Thread count is often misunderstood and rarely reflects true quality. A more meaningful indicator is fibre length, particularly long-staple cotton, which produces stronger, smoother yarns that hold up over time. Within this category, certain Egyptian cotton varieties—such as Giza 45, Giza 87, Giza 92 and Giza 94—are especially prized for their exceptional fineness and durability. Paired with thoughtful weaving and finishing, these materials create linens that soften with use while maintaining their structure.

LL: At David’s Fine Linens, you prioritize natural fibres over synthetics—can you explain why this choice matters for both comfort and long-term use?

DS: Natural fibres offer a level of comfort and performance that synthetics struggle to replicate. Cotton is inherently breathable, moisture-absorbing and temperature-regulating, creating a more balanced sleep environment throughout the year. This is especially important for anyone prone to overheating, night sweats or seasonal shifts in temperature. Over time, natural fibres also age gracefully, softening without losing strength or integrity. Synthetics, by contrast, tend to trap heat, hold onto odours, and break down more quickly. Choosing natural materials supports immediate comfort while delivering durability, consistency and a better feel against the skin for years of everyday use.

LL: David’s Fine Linens carries OEKO-TEX®–certified products. Can you explain what that means and why it is meaningful for today’s consumer?

DS: OEKO-TEX® certification means a textile has been tested for harmful substances at every stage of production, which is especially important for bedding that remains in close contact with the skin. There is also added credibility when fabrics are finished in Europe, where production standards and oversight tend to be more rigorous. Many of the products we carry are both made and finished in Europe, offering an additional layer of assurance around safety, consistency and quality for today’s more informed consumer.

LL: With increased allergens in the air during spring, how can bedding materials contribute to—or help alleviate—such issues as skin redness, itching and dryness?

DS: Spring brings increased allergens, fluctuating temperatures and greater skin sensitivity, particularly as windows are opened and air quality shifts. Bedding plays a surprisingly important role during this transition. Breathable, natural materials like cotton help regulate temperature and manage moisture, preventing heat and humidity from aggravating the skin. Equally important is how fabrics are finished—linens free from harsh chemical treatments are gentler on reactive skin. Thoughtful material choices can help minimize irritation, supporting calmer, more comfortable skin throughout the season.

LL: What’s one misconception about luxury linens you’d love to correct for consumers who are just beginning to think more consciously about their purchases?

DS: One of the most common misconceptions is that luxury linens are delicate or impractical, meant to be admired rather than used. In reality, the best luxury bedding is designed for everyday living. It should withstand regular washing, maintain its feel and appearance, and become more comfortable over time. True luxury is not about preservation, but performance—pieces that quietly support comfort, ease, and well-being. When linens are made thoughtfully, they elevate daily routines rather than demand special care or restraint.
