Inner Sanctum
Through sculptural design and thoughtful innovation, TOTO is reshaping the ensuite into a sanctuary for modern wellness.

Ensuite bathrooms are evolving beyond the traditional spa experience into something more intimate and sensual: a retreat designed for restoration and rejuvenation. Much of this shift is being driven by TOTO’s state-of-the-art innovations.
“Our designs are transforming ensuites from practical functionality into a personal sanctuary that invites homeowners to slow down and reconnect with their bodies as they clear their minds,” says Michael Bancheri, Canada’s senior regional sales director for the Japanese luxury bathroom brand TOTO. “We’re turning daily routines into luxurious rituals that promote greater wellness through better self-care.”
That focus on comfort and sensory experience is evident in TOTO’s fixtures themselves. The curvaceous silhouette of the company’s Neorest toilet line introduces a sculptural form in refined ceramic, ushering in a new era for commodes. A gently inclined seat provides ergonomic comfort.
“All these innovative designs evoke a different energy in the way they mirror nature’s beauty,” Bancheri says. “The Neorest NX, for example, bears the shape of a water droplet, which some might not consciously realize but feel immediately drawn to its calming familiarity.”
In 1980, TOTO reinvented the bidet experience with the introduction of its Washlet seat. “It offers a soft nightlight, warm seating and, most significantly, a range of pulsating and oscillating sprays to fully customize the experience for each user,” Bancheri explains.
TOTO is working to encourage greater adoption of bidets across North America as a cleaner, more sustainable practice. “Despite the 70 million units sold, only a small percentage of North Americans use a bidet seat compared to it being more standardized across Europe and Asia,” Bancheri says, noting that awareness of the technology is gradually increasing.
The brand’s innovations extend to bathing as well. Imagine immersing yourself in a bathtub designed to evoke near weightless relaxation through its gently reclined, body-supporting form. That’s the experience behind TOTO’s recently introduced Flotation Tub, available in drop-in or freestanding models.
“During test sessions, small electronic diodes were placed on the subject’s scalp to monitor their brain impulse in response to various aspects of the tub’s design,” Bancheri says. The result is a bathing experience intended to relax the body at multiple points of contact.
“The HYDROHANDS jets gently massage a homeowner’s lower back, while mass air jets massage the calves and ankles. “Additionally, the neck rests’ cascading waterflow can be adjusted to give each individual a tailored experience.”
“We’re turning daily routines into luxurious rituals that promote greater wellness through better self-care.”
These distinctive bathroom elements are readily complemented by TOTO’s Kiwami asymmetrical sinks, which challenge the familiar forms of standard round or rectangular basins, along with the brand’s artfully sculpted faucets. “The ensuite becomes a true extension of your bedroom’s relaxing atmosphere, where you want to gently start your day and later unwind,” Bancheri says.
As homeowners place greater emphasis on self-care, bathrooms are becoming more thoughtfully designed spaces, with larger ensuites allowing for more immersive routines. “We’re now spending much more time on morning and nighttime rituals, with more focus on skin, hair, and other personal care,” Bancheri says.
TOTO regularly holds wellness events to remind people of the health benefits of practising greater self-care, especially with mindful presence. For the brand, wellness extends beyond product design to the broader conversation around daily rituals and wellbeing. “We consider it essential to take good care of yourself so you can then be your best for others,” Bancheri says.
